West of Billings, about 600 people live in this quiet community with an endless, panoramic view. Nearby Big Lake Complex offers two wildlife refuges and one of the most productive waterfowl areas in central Montana. Hailstone National Wildlife Refuge is in wide-open short grass prairie country noted for waterfowl, shorebirds, pronghorn antelope and sharp-tailed grouse, plus a black-tailed prairie dog town on the east side of the lake. Halfbreed National Wildlife Refuge honors its wildlife sanctuary status, limiting recreation to bird-watching and hiking.
History buffs explore Canyon Creek Battlefield Monument, located at the site of the battle between the Nez Perce and the U.S. Calvary. Each September, the Nez Perce hold a pipe ceremony at the battle site to honor the region's past.
